Description

Myrsine lanaiensis, Leaves bright red or often with purple midribs when young, clustered toward the tips of the branches, membranous to chartaceous or occasionally coriaceous, elliptic to elliptic-lanceolate or oblong-ovate, (6-)8-16(-18) cm long, 2.3-6 cm wide, midrib prominent, lateral veins usually ca. 12-15 pairs, conspicuous, usually ca. 4-6 mm apart, higher order venation forming a conspicuous reticulate pattern, submarginal vein irregular, glabrous or lower surface rarely brown short-hirtellous (Auwahi, Maui), margins entire, flat or slightly revolute, apex obtuse to rounded, base cuneate, petioles 5-20 mm long. Flowers apparently perfect, (2-)4-12 in bracteolate fascicles arising on short, often stout, woody knobs usually below the leaves, pedicels 5-10 mm long, glabrous; calyx lobes ca. 0.8-1 mm long, margins ciliate; petals oblong-oblanceolate, 3-4.5 mm long, covered with conspicuous secretory lines, margins ciliate; anthers ca. 1.5 mm long, apex with a tuft of hairs; ovary glabrous; stigma subsessile, capitate-angled. Drupes dark purple, depressed-globose, ca. 6-8 mm in diameter, smooth.
