Muhlenbergia paniculata (synonym: Schedonnardus paniculatus ) is a species of plants monocots of the family of Poaceae , subfamily of Chloridoideae , native to America . They are herbaceous, perennial, bunching plants with upright stems up to 45 cm tall, which prefer open habitats ( Prairie ). In this species, the inflorescence, a panicle composed of five to ten ears of spikelets , detaches in its entirety at maturity and constitutes the unit of dissemination , behaving like a twirling , hence its vernacular name in the United States of America. " Tumble grass " 2 . Muhlenbergia is a genus of plants in the grass family.The genus is named in honor of the German-American amateur botanist Gotthilf Heinrich Ernst Muhlenberg (1753-1815). Many of the species are known by the common name muhly. The greatest number are native to the southwestern United States and Mexico, but there are also native species in Canada, Central and South America and in Asia.
