Description

The species of Platanthera are distinguished from those of Orchis and those of Habenaria , by the absence of stigmatic processes, by having a nectar spur to attract pollinating insects . Another distinguishing characteristic is that of its roots ovoid tubers.It reaches a size between 25 to 60 cm in height. It has a perennial bulb. The orchids are terrestrial unlike other exotic species, which are epiphytic plants , that is, they do not live at the expense of other plants of large proportions. The leaves are whole and the shape of the basal leaves are different from the caulinarias (dimorphic foliage). The basal leaves are opposite with the elliptical apex, rounded and shiny surface. The leaves caulinares are lanceoladas, acute and reducing progressively towards the inflorescencia . The inflorescence is a spike . The flowers are hermaphroditic and irregularly zigomorphicyellowish green. The fruit is a globular capsule that contains numerous small flat seeds inside.
