Piedmont staggerbush (Lyonia mariana)

Description

Lyonia mariana is an attractive, 2-6- tall upright rhizomatous shrub with delicate white to pink tubular flowers that hang in graceful clusters. Staggerbush produces leathery green leaves during summer and can develop good red fall color. It performs best in moist to wet, sandy or peaty soils in filtered shade to full sun; however, it is adaptable to loamy garden soils. This understory shrub is a good plant to incorporate in a naturalistic garden setting where it can spread freely. It works well with Vaccinium corymbosum, Rhododendron viscosum, Eubotrys racemosa, Chamaedaphne calyculata, Itea virginica, Gaylussacia frondosa, Magnolia virginiana, Ilex opaca, and Nyssa sylvatica.
