Description

Glabrous tufted perennial with short rhizome. Culms grooved, angular, compressed, to 65(-100) cm high, 1-1.5 mm diam. Leaves about half as long as culms, 0.5-1.5 mm wide; ligule a dense fringe of short hairs. Inflorescence simple, with 3-7 (rarely 1 or as many as 11) solitary spikelets, on branches to 4 cm long; involucral bracts leaf-like, 1 or 2, erect, to 3 cm long (usually much shorter). Spikelets ovoid to ovoid-lanceolate, terete, acute, (6-)10-25 mm long, 4-6 mm diam. Glumes spiral, papery, obtuse, mucronulate, scarcely keeled, faintly many-nerved, 4-6 mm long, 3-4.5 mm wide, orange-brown. Stamens 3; anthers 1.5-2.5 mm long. Style 2-fid, long-ciliate above.
