Glabrous; stems tufted on a very short, or obsolete, rhizome, 6-24 in. long, often much flattened at the top; leaves often 4-8 by 1/5 in., obtuse; umbel with 6-180 pedicelled spikelets; bracts 2, shorter than the umbel, often suberect, like the leaves, with obtuse tip; spikelets 1/4 by 1/12 in., dense, chestnut-red or brownish-red; glumes boat-shaped, ovate, acute; stamens often 3; style longer than the nut, linear, glabrous, branches 3, linear; nut very small, narrow-obovoid, round trigonous, straw-coloured, slenderly longitudinally ribbed because the transversely oblong cells are in vertical series. null
