Description

Saxifraga cochlearis is a perennial plant that reaches a size of 5 to 40 centimeters in height. Form flat cushions of numerous rosettes without flowers. The leaves of the rosette measure from 8 to 40 mm long, 3 to 6 mm wide, spoon-shaped and gray-green. In the upper part they are rounded, obtuse or slightly pointed. The margin of the leaf is slightly wavy, not perforated and studded with dimples. The floral stem is reddish brown, thin, hairy glandular, erect or arched ascending with 1 to 3 flowers available. The petals are oblong-ovate. The time of flowering is from June to July. The species has the number of chromosomes 2n = 28. It is found in the Maritime Alps and Liguria in the Alps and subalpine Alps in the cracks and crevices of limestone rocks at altitudes of up to 1,900 meters.
