Delphinium cheilanthum is a perennial. Friedrich Ernst Ludwig von Fischer already described Delphinium cheilanthum but the name was validly published by Augustin Pyramus de Candolle in 1817. Delphinium cheilanthum is a species in the genus Delphinium which contains approximately 503 to 566 species and belongs to the family of the Ranunculaceae (Buttercup Family). The type species of the genus is Delphinium peregrinum. The perennials reach heights of 80 to 140 centimetres. Delphinium cheilanthum has simple leaves that are alternate. The leaves are palmately lobed, lobate and petiolate. Delphinium cheilanthum produces racemes of purple cup-shaped flowers from June to July. The perennials prefer a sunny situation on moderately moist soil. The substrate should be sandy loam. They tolerate temperatures down to -35°C (USDA zone 4).
