Description

Helonias is a plant from the melanthiaceae ( Melanthiaceae ). The species was Carl Linnaeus set out in his Species Plantarum in 1753. It is a herbaceous , perennial with rhizomes . The plant grows in large, dense 'carpets'. The leaves are up to 30 cm long, lance-shaped and parallelnervig . During the winter the leaves often change color from green to brown and they lie flat on the ground or are slightly raised. Often they are then covered with leaf litter. In the center of the leaves is one round button, the flower head for the next flowering season. The leaves form a ground terminal rosette that originate from a rigid, hollow stem. This stem can be 20-90 cm high during flowering and up to 1.5 m in height during the ripening of the seeds .
