Description

It is a rhizomatous aquatic plant,up to 1,5 meters high.It has long,spongy,sheathing petioles,which carry large ovate leaves,engraved,up to 46 cm long by 15 cm wide,with rounded base and pointed apex.In summer it shows dense panicles,with rachis with internodes of less than 3 mm,with corolla of violet petals,of 6 mm.Fruit in autumn.The fruit is a 7 mm,almost spherical capsule.During the dry season,or in freezing zones,the aerial part of the plant dries completely,but it does not die,as it regrows from the rhizomes when the conditions return to be favorable.It is cultivated as an ornamental plant,for ponds.
