Magnolia wugangensis (Magnolia wugangensis)

Description

Yulania is the name of a genus of plants from the Magnolia family, which is distinguished by some authors. Yulania, after the publication of the name in 1838, hardly accepted as an independent sex by other authors and did not appear as a gender in any survey work.  However, the group of Magnolias that fall under this name was long regarded as a clearly distinguishable subgenus of Magnolia. It is only since genealogical research using DNA sequencing has made clear the relationships within the Magnoliaceae family that the status of Yulania has become subject to change. The species from the subgenus Yulania are much more closely related to those from the genus Michelia than to those from the subgenus Magnolia. Some, mostly Western, authors now place the species from the subfamily Magnolioideae all in one large genus of Magnolia, where Yulania is reduced to a section of the subgenus Yulania. Other, mostly Chinese, authors divide the subfamily into a large number of small genera, of which Yulania is one, with about 20 species. Yulania's are distinguished from the other taxa of the Magnolioideae by the number of seeds per berry, namely one or two, the number of teepals (nine), the terminal flowers (compared to axillary by the closely related Michelias ), and the fact that all species are deciduous. See Magnolia for the taxonomic classification. The species from this section (or this genus) are found in the temperate and subtropical zone of Southeast Asia and (one species) in North America. Most species are hardy in Western Europe until South Scandinavia, where they are planted as ornamental plants.
