Description

Cyperus betchei is a sedge of the Cyperaceae family that is native to Australia. The perennial sedge typically grows to a height of 0.7 to 1.2 metres (2.3 to 3.9 ft) and produces brown flowers. The species was first formally described by the botanist Stanley Thatcher Blake in 1940 as part of the work Notes on Australian Cyperaceae, III as published in the Proceedings of the Royal Society of Queensland. The only known synonym is Cyperus angustatus var. betchei as described by Georg Kükenthal in 1936. In Western Australia it is found in the Kimberley, Pilbara and Goldfields-Esperance regions where it grows in sandy-loamy soils. It is also found in seasonally wet areas through the Northern Territory, Queensland and New South Wales There are two known subspecies: - Cyperus betchei (Kuek.) S.T.Blake subsp. betchei - Cyperus betchei subsp. commiscens K.L.Wilson 1991
