Description

Canotia is a planting genus from the family of spindle tree plants (Celastraceae). Canotia are bare trees or shrubs, and there are dark glands on the trunks. The leaves change and are reduced to shed leaves. The inflorescence is aching, sympodial, or thyrsenlike . The flowers are hermit and fivefold, the disk fleshy and ring-shaped, five-angled or five-lobed. The dust bags open along the center of the flower, the fruit node is fivefold, and there are two to six seed plants per compartment . The fruit is an elongated, beak-shaped and woody capsule that opens longitudinally and along the septa, each compartment with a (rarely two) seed . The seeds are elongated, flattened and protein-rich, they can be winged at the neck.
