Description

Silene undulata grows as a perennial herbaceous plant with a height of up to 60 cm.Many plant parts are covered with sticky glands.The basal leaves are spatulate-elongated,have a length of up to 15 cm and a width of 2.5 cm and narrow to a stem.The leaves distributed on the stalks have a length of up to 8 cm and a width of 2 cm,but are usually smaller and at most very short stalked.The blade edge is smooth to sometimes wavy. The terminal,rispy,zymous inflorescence contains only a few flowers and leaves,which are very similar to the upper stem leaves,but become progressively narrower.The flowering period is from October to April.The flowers smell very aromatic after cloves,jasmine and bananas.The flower stalks are about 0.6 to 2 cm long.The flowers open at night and usually roll inwards during the day.The hermetic flowers are fivefold.The cylindrical calyx,which is widespread in the ripe fruit,is ten-ribged,2.5 to 3.5 cm long,and about 0.5 cm wide with 5 mm long gullet teeth.The five white or pink cream petalsand are deeply lobed with a nail which is about longer than the cup.The toothed crown scales are about 1.5 mm long.There are two circles,each with five dust leaves,the length being about 3.5 cm and the shorter ones about 1.7 cm long.The simple fruit-knot is oblong-ovoid.The three styluses are about 1.5 cm long. The elongated egg-shaped capsule fruit has a length of 1.2 to 1.8 cm and a diameter of about 0.8 cm.It opens from the top with back-bent flaps on a length of one-third to half and contains many seeds.The almost black seeds are about 1.2 x 1 mm in size and kidney shaped.
