Swamp Fly Honeysuckle (Lonicera oblongifolia)
Description
Swamp honeysuckle (aka swamp-fly honeysuckle) is a native species of -- you guessed it -- swamps, bogs, and forested wetlands; it especially likes cool cedar swamps with calcareous substrate. This upright plant grows to 1.5 m (4 feet) tall, with opposite, hairy leaves 2-5 cm (1-2 inches) long. Pairs of narrow, yellow flowers produced in May-June form red berries in the fall. The red fruits (and the overlapping, scale-like winter bud coverings) distinguish this species from the only other wetland honeysuckle, Mountain-fly honeysuckle (L. villosa). This primarily northern species occurs only in northern Maine and Vermont in New England; it is listed as Special Concern in Maine
