Blueleaf Honeysuckle (Lonicera korolkowii)

Description

Cold hardy, drought tolerant and delicately beautiful in bloom, this very large upright deciduous shrub is carefree. Blueleaf honeysuckle is native to the arid mountains of central Asia, Pakistan and Afghanistan. Selection 'Floribunda' - marketed as Blue Velvet- - is known for its profusion of light pink flowers and more resplendent blue-gray tint to its leaves. This shrub has a dense, multi-stemmed twiggy habit and bears large, pointed light grayish blue-green leaves with bluish undersides. Unfortunately the leaves do not turn color before dropping in autumn. The small pink blossoms are produced in pairs in late spring. They are followed by a red to orange berry that ripens in mid- to late summer. The bright fruits stand out in high contrast against the bluish leaves. The berries are relished by birds that help distribute the seeds, which readily sprout.
