Pilosocereus leucocephalus (Pilosocereus leucocephalus)

Description

Pilosocereus leucocephalus is a species in the genus Pilosocereus of the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet leucocephalus means 'with a white head'. Trivial names are "Cabeza de Viejo", "Organo", "Pitayón" and "Tuno". Pilosocereus leucocephalus grows tree-shaped with a short, distinct trunk, from below branched, upright or ascending green to blue-green shoots of 6 to 10 centimeters in diameter and reaches a stature height of 2 to 5 meters. There are 7 to 12 ribs available. The initially brownish thorns later turn gray. The single middle is 2 to 3 inches long. The 8 to 12 slender marginal spines are 1 to 2 inches long. The flowering, close to the top or laterally located part of the shoots is clearly distinguishable and comprises 3 to 4 ribs, from whose areoles numerous silky, white, 4 to 10 centimeters long hair spring. The tubular to bell-shaped flowers are more or less pink to whitish. They are up to 6 inches long. The spherical fruits reach diameters of up to 4 centimeters and contain a magenta pulp.
