Pitahaya de aguas (Peniocereus cuixmalensis)

Description

Peniocereus cuixmalensis does not grow or with sparsely branched, mostly erect shoots just above the ground. The carrot-like, occasionally forked roots are 25 to 35 inches long. The elongated, four-edged, light green shoots are whitish spotted. They are 80 to 220 centimeters long and have a diameter of 2.5 to 3.5 centimeters. There are four corrugated ribs. The thick, strong thorns are thickened at their base. They are reddish at first and later turn horny. The single middle is 1 to 1.5 inches long. The six to seven emitting edge thorns have a length of 8 to 20 millimeters. The funnel-shaped, fragrant, white flowers open at night. They are 9 to 11 inches long. The egg-shaped fruits are 5 to 6 inches long and have a diameter of 3.5 to 4 inches. They contain a red, juicy pulp.
