Description
Mammillaria heyderi is a species of the genus Mammillaria in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet heyderi honors the German Privy Councilor and cactus expert Eduard Heyder (1808-1884) from Berlin. [1] English common names are "Ball Cactus", "Cream Cactus", "Cream Pincushion", "Flat Cream Pincushion", "Heyder's Nipple Cactus", "Heyder's Pincushion", "Nipple Cactus", "Pancake Pincushion" and "Small -Spined Cream Pincushion . Mammillaria heyderi grows individually. The depressed, spherical, green shoots grow up to 5 inches high and 8 to 12 inches in diameter. The elongated pyramidal or conical warts do not contain any milk juice . The axillae are first filled with wool, later they are balding. The 1 to 2 middle spines , sometimes missing, are spangled, dark horny. They are 0.3 to 1 inches long. The 6 to 22 bristle-like marginal spines are white. They are 0.6 to 0.8 inches long.
