Description

Eriosyce esmeraldana is a species in the genus Eriosyce of the cactus family(Cactaceae). The epithet of the species goes back to the site of the plant, the Chilean town of Esmeralda .Eriosyce esmeraldana grows as a geophyte with a long, conical taproot. The flattened plant body sometimes forms lateral shoots at the base, is dark green to reddish brown in color and reaches a diameter of 3 to 4 centimeters. The 13 to 22 ribs are completely dissolved in bumps . The thin and needle-like thorns sit 5 to 7 pieces on the areoles and are 0.3 to 0.5 inches long. The funnel-shaped flowers appear only on the young areoles and are colored yellow to reddish. They are 2 to 3 inches long and wide. The pericarpell and the flower tube are covered with dense wool and black bristles.
