Brownspine Hedgehog Cactus (Echinocereus russanthus)
Description
Echinocereus russanthus grows individually or branchedly from the base. The upright cylindrical shoots are 7.5 to 25 centimeters long and have diameters of 5 to 7.5 centimeters. They are concealed by the bedding. There are ten to 18 ribs , which are clearly bumped. The seven to twelve spreading middle thorns are red, creamy or brownish. They have a length of up to 3 centimeters. The 30 to 45 reddish to brownish spines are up to 1.8 centimeters long.The short funnel- shaped flowers are light red to bright red. They often appear in tufts on the sides of the shoots and do not always open completely. The flowers are 2.5 to 3 centimeters long and reach the same diameter. The green spherical fruits are heavily spiked.
