Klein's cholla (Cylindropuntia kleiniae)
Description
Cylindropuntia kleiniae is a species in the genus Cylindropuntia in the family of the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet honors the German botanist Jacob Theodor Klein . Spanish common names are "Cardoncillo", "Klein's Cholla", "Tasajillo" and "tasajo"Cylindropuntia kleiniae grows shrubby, is sparse and openly branched and reaches stature heights of 0.5 to 2.5 meters. On the 4 to 20 centimeters long and 0.6 to 1.2 centimeters in diameter measuring instep sections are clearly recognizable bumps. The yellow-soled areoles become darker with age and carry 0.5 to 2.5 millimeters long yellow glochids . The one to four spines are present on almost all areoles or sometimes missing. They are acicular, straight to slightly curved, often repulsed, yellow to gray, and have a lighter tip. The thorns are 1 to 3 inches long.
