Description

Coryphantha cornifera is a species in the genus Coryphantha from the family of cactus (Cactaceae). The epithet cornifera is derived from the Latin words cornus for, horn 'and -fer supporting for,' and refers to the hooked central spines of the species. Coryphantha cornifera grows single with globular to ovate, light green to glaucous green shoots , which reach stature heights of up to 12 centimeters. The up to 2.5 centimeters long, diamond-shaped to conical warts overlap a bit brick-shaped. The single, dark-colored central spine , which can also be missing, is strong and bent downwards. The 16 to 17 grayish spines are 1 to 1.2 inches long. The yellow flowers are up to 7 inches long and reach a diameter of 6 centimeters. Coryphantha cornifera is distributed in the Mexican states of Hidalgo , Querétaro , Guanajuato , San Luis Potosí , Jalisco and Zacatecas on limestone gravel. The first description as Mammillaria cornifera by Augustin-Pyrame de Candolle was published in 1828. Charles Lemaire put the type 1868 in the genus Coryphantha . Nomenklatorische synonyms are Echinocactus cornifer (DC.) Poselger (1853) and Cactus cornifer (DC.) Kuntze (1891). Other synonyms include Mammillaria cornuta Hildm. ex K.Schum.
