Description

Austrocylindropuntia cylindrica grows shrubby or tree-shaped, is loosely to densely branched and reaches stature heights of up to 4 meters and more. The non-brittle, dark green shoot sections appear laterally from older shoots. They are conspicuously rhomboidally tuberculate and up to 25 inches and more long. From the areoles on it originate weak, inconspicuous glochids of 1 to 2 millimeters in length. The leaf rudiments are pretty long and up to 10 millimeters long. There are two to six (rarely to eight) thornsavailable. They are sprawling, straight, twisted or slightly flattened and sometimes slightly fluffy. Their length is about 1 centimeter, rarely up to 3 centimeters. The red flowers are 5 to 7 inches long. The elongated pericarpella is occupied at the base with areoles that carry glochids. It is sometimes hairy. The ellipsoidal to urn-shaped fruits are up to 9 inches long.
