Deuterocohnia brevifolia (Deuterocohnia brevifolia)

Description

Deuterocohnia brevifolia is an evergreen perennial ground cover, with very small narrowly standing rosettes (up to 2 inches (5 cm) in diameter) of leaves, forming a mound up to 3 feet (90 cm) in diameter. The leaves are densely arranged, triangular, toothed at the base and with sharp tips, up to 0.8 inch (2 cm) long. Flowers are small and insignificant, solitary, cylindrical and intensely green. Deuterocohnia is a genus of the botanical family Bromeliaceae, subfamily Tillandsioideae, endemic to South America. The genus is named for Ferdinand Julius Cohn, Jewish botanist and bacteriologist. Plants once described as belonging to the genus Abromeitiella have been reevaluated and reclassified within Deuterocohnia following modern DNA analysis.
