Arctic Pennycress (Noccaea arctica)

Description

Thlaspi, or pennycress, is a genus of herbs of temperate regions of the Eurasian continent. They are native in Central and South Europe, South-West Asia and 2 species are endemic to China. The Thlaspi has been proven to be a hyperaccumulator of heavy metals such as zinc and cadmium and therefore may be used in phytoremediation initiatives. They are annual, biennial or perennial herbs, glabrous, often glaucous, rarely hairy with simple, erect or suberect hairs. Simple leaves, usually obovate, oblong, cauline leaves ovate or lanceolate above all, cordate, (atrium rarely suppressed or absent), amplexicaules, whole or dentate. Clusters corymbose. Small, white, pink or yellowish flowers; with filiform peduncle. The fruit is a silicua usually obovate-oblong or sub-orbicular, flattened laterally, slightly winged (rarely with the wings suppressed), often ± dentate at the apex (rarely whole), dehiscent, glabrous; septum narrowly elliptical, membranous, without paste, ellipsoid seeds, brown.
