Description

Amphilophium is a genus of flowering plants in the Bignoniaceae family, native to South America. Amphilophium crucigerum has escaped from cultivation elsewhere. They are vines, the sharply hexagonal twigs with ribbed, dendroid-pubescent angles at least in the ribs; interpeciolar glandular fields absent; pseudoestípulas foliáceas, early deciduas. Leaves 2-3-foliolate, sometimes with a trifid tendril, leaflets ovate to sub-rounded, 2.5-16 cm long and 2.1-10.7 cm wide, apex acuminate to obtuse, base truncate to asymmetrically cordate, variably dendroid-pubescent, a sometimes also with simple trichomes, especially in the beam. Inflorescence a terminal narrow panicle, the variously dendroid-pubescent branches, red-purple flowers in the anthesis; double chalice, interior 2-3-labiate, outer more or less 5-labiate, forming a wrinkled margin; tubular corolla, bilabiate, 2.4-3.5 cm long, the 2 upper wolves fused, the 3 lower wolves fused and 1.3-1.8 cm long, the 5 wolves remain more or less fused until a pollinator separates them, glabrous to scarcely simple puberulent on the outside; ovary ovate-cylindrical, slightly compressed at the base, 2-3 mm long and ca 2 mm wide, pubescent with simple trichomes and dendroids; annular-pulviniform disk, 1 mm long and 3-4 mm wide. Capsule rounded-oblong, somewhat flattened, 3.9-9.5 cm long and 2.5-3.8 cm wide, the surface dark, densely lepidote; puberulent seeds and mostly brown wings. pubescent with simple trichomes and dendroids; annular-pulviniform disk, 1 mm long and 3-4 mm wide.
