It is primarily a vegetable grown as tuber food in Central America. Its economic importance in such areas is remarkable. It is locally known with the names Melloco in Ecuador , olluco in Peru , Chugua in Colombia and Steal in Venezuela. Generally it is said in Latin America Papa lisa . The plant is a herbaceous climbing of discrete size (up to a length of two or three meters), the leaves are heart-shaped and are edible cooked like spinach , the tubers are instead cucinabili such as potatoes.
