Whale's tongue century plant (Agave ovatifolia)
Description
This stunning agave has a bold silhouette and wide, powder-blue leaves. It forms a slightly flattened rosette, and the leaves have a pronounced groove or gutter on the upper surface. Mature plants will attain a height of 3 feet and a width of 4 feet. A native of northern Nuevo Leon, Mexico it is a recently described species by Greg Starr of Tucson and Jose Villareal of Mexico. Related to Agave havardiana and A. parrasana, it has a tall, branching flower stalk with clusters of light green flowers. In cooler locations it may be planted in full sun, but it should be provided some afternoon shade in the low deserts. This plant will die following flowering. Hardy to 0° F.
