Description

Eryngium duriaei is a phanerogamous species of Eryngium belonging to the family of apiáceas It is a perennial herb which reaches a size between 30-100 cm in height, erect, spiny. Woody strain, little branched, often with fibrous remains. Stems of 0.3-0.9 cm in diameter at the base, simple or scarcely branched at the height of the inflorescence, greenish, glabrous. Leaves all chartaceous, with pinnacle-reticulated net, glaucescent; the basal ones 8-25 × 2-5 cm, obovate-oblong or spatulate, from undivided, with the margin finely denticulate-spiny and flat, to pinnatifid, with the margin irregularly sinuate-dentate, prickly and wavy, persistent in the anthesis, with net petiole 2-3 cm, unarmed; leaves caulinares c. 10-15, from 2.5-16 × 2-3 cm, scattered, spiny, subamplexicaul, the lower ones similar to the basal ones although with a shorter petiole, the rest sessile and with the limb much more divided -from pinnatifidae to pinnatipartidas-, the superior fertile ones, of lanceolate contour, with a pair of very evident lateral segments. Multifocal, clearly outlined, unequal, the terminal of 40-80 × 15-30 mm, cylindrical-ellipsoidal, with peduncle of 30-50 mm, the lateral ellipsoidal, of the third part of the size of the terminal, in short branches in the armpits of the upper leaves. Bracts 8-12, 15-55 × c. 10 mm, shorter than the chapter (1 / 3-3 / 4 of its length), long cuspidadas -and with 2-4 spinules on each side-, rigid, with very marked middle nerve, glabrous, green, with spines until 18 mm, alternating with them at the base. Bract them c. 10-12 mm, as many as flowers, rigid, trifid, glabrous. Sepals c. 5 mm, ovate-lanceolate, with wide whiteish membranous margin, acuminate, glabrous. Mericarps 3-4 × 2.5-3 mm, densely covered with obtuse scales-those of the commissures up to 0.6 mm-. It has a number ofchromosomes of n = 8.
