Didymaotus lapidiformis (Didymaotus lapidiformis)

Description

Didymaotus lapidiformis is the only plant of the monotypical genus Didymaotus from the family of midday flower plants (Aizoaceae). The botanical name of the genus derives from the Greek words δίδυμος (didymos) for "double" and aotos for "flowering" and indicates that the plants often two flowers appear simultaneously. The epithet of the species derives from the Latin words "lapidis" for "stone" and "formis" for "shaped" and means stone-like. Didymaotus lapidiformis grows compact, rarely branches and survives during the resting phase usually with a single, closely pressed leaf pair. Of the foliage leaves of a pair of leaves, one is usually slightly larger than the other. The greyish-green to reddish, deltoid leaves are fused together at the base and together form a rhombus when seen from above They are about the same length, wide and high with up to 40 millimeters. The individual, bracts bearing, fragrant flowers appear on proleptic side shoots on one or both sides of the new central leaf pair. They reach a diameter of up to 35 millimeters. There are six about the same, clearly keel-shaped sepals present. The approximately 100 purple petals are from the outside (about 12 millimeters) inside (about 5 millimeters) shorter. The approximately 200 to 230 violet stamens are briefly papillös at the base The nectaries are fused ring-shaped, they are coronary and dark brownish-green. Didymaotus lapidiformis blooms in their home country in the month of October. The six (rarely seven) fanatical capsule fruits are similar to those of the genus Titanopsis measure about 10 millimeters in diameter and remain on the plants. The smooth yellowish-brown seeds are rounded.
